Select Board Areas of focus
SELECT BOARD MEMBER AREAS OF FOCUS
At the September 3, 2026, meeting, the Select Board adopted assignments giving each member a set of town functions for which that member is the first point of contact. The number of projects and initiatives in the town has exploded in recent years, and it is no longer feasible for all three Select Board members to keep up with every detail on every town issue. With a point person in each major area, that Board member will be able to stay on top of developments and keep the other Board members up to speed and ready to make any decisions that need to come before the full Board. These designations will be reviewed at least once an year. The assignment list is below.
The idea to publicly assign specific topics to each Board member is an outgrowth of conversations with our citizens at the post-town meeting gathering this spring. If members of the public want to bring an issue or question to the Board, they will now know which Board member to contact as a first step. For example, if someone has a question about cemetery plots, Les would be the right person to contact. If folks have questions about the Orland Falcon, Cliff is the contact. Gina would be the contact for general questions about the Watershed Districts. Of course, citizens may still reach out to any Board member with questions or concerns.
Over the last two years, we have put in place a very capable and dedicated group of employees. While the full Select Board is ultimately responsible for all town operations, these folks are fully responsible for different parts of our town's day-to-day operations:
- Lisa Smith - Town Office Services
- Shirle Hincks - Town Finances
- Amber Poulin - Assessor
- Sue Lampher - Orland Community Center
- Mike Malenfant - Town Properties
- Gary Newbegin - Transfer Station
- Luke Chiavelli - Code Enforcement
- Brandon Patterson - Animal Control
As part of formalizing Select Board members' focus areas, the identified member will work closely with the staff lead to support their work, clarify town policies, and stay informed of any issues or concerns that need to be brought to the full Board.
Anytime a major decision needs to be made for the town, the entire Board will always be involved. The board acts only as a body, at a public meeting, by vote. That has always been the case, and these contact assignments do not change it.
